What Is Biotin?

Biotin is a water-soluble vitamin that our bodies require for energy, and can keep our hair, nails, and skin looking healthy. Biotin, formerly known as vitamin H, is now categorized as a B-Vitamin (B-7) and has gained prominence due to its beneficial role in healthier hair, skin, and nails. Biotin is also important in breaking down carbs, proteins, and lipids that require biotin as a cofactor – much like B-12 it has a vital role in regular bodily functions. It helps the pancreas, thyroid, and adrenal glands with gene expression, nervous system function, and endocrine activity.

Positive Effects of Consuming Biotin

Apart from biotin being a versatile addition to your beauty routine, it has been shown in studies to aid in the management of diabetes symptoms by regulating the control of blood sugar levels. Furthermore, B vitamins support healthy brain function, which can play a role in the management of diabetes-related neurological symptoms such as debilitating neuropathy (damage or dysfunction of a nerve).

Biotin is also considered an essential nutrient for pregnancy. According to many research studies, Biotin deficiency (which is prevalent among pregnant women) has been linked to health problems in normal child development. As a result, pregnant women should consider taking biotin supplements if they are not already taking a prenatal vitamin. Most prenatal vitamins should include Biotin in an appropriate dose.
