Think of iron like a courier, and oxygen like packages ordered online. The courier picks up packages from a distribution center, loads them onto trucks, and transports them to homes. If there aren't enough couriers to meet delivery demands, packages don't arrive on time.
In the same way, iron picks up oxygen from the lungs, loads it onto red blood cells, and transports it to every cell in the body. Once cells receive oxygen, they use it to create the fuel that allows the body to function. Without enough iron to carry oxygen to cells, the body can't produce energy, leading to fatigue.
Low iron affects more than just energy levels. When cells lack oxygen, every action in the body is impacted, from the brain to the toes. This is why low iron can cause slow wound healing, muscle weakness, concentration and memory problems, depression, headaches, hair loss, and a weakened immune system. Iron deficiency can also hinder cognitive development, lead to behavioral concerns, and contribute to ADHD in children.
The best way to assess iron status is by getting a blood test to measure ferritin, which indicates iron storage. In Canada, "normal" ferritin in adults is defined within a broad range of 5-272 ug/L. However, someone with a ferritin of 7 ug/L will likely feel very different from someone with a ferritin of 200 ug/L.
Research shows that iron supplementation can help alleviate fatigue, even when ferritin levels aren't low enough to cause anemia. Dr. Hilary recommends aiming for a ferritin level of 70-100 ug/L for optimal body function.
Certain groups are more likely to have low iron, such as:
Women with heavy periods
Those lacking a nutrient-rich diet
Pregnant and breastfeeding individuals
Children with behavioral concerns or ADHD
People experiencing fatigue, depression, or brain fog
Individuals taking acid-blocking medications for heartburn
Those with digestive conditions like Celiac disease, colitis, Crohn's disease, and SIBO
How it Works
Floradix is a liquid iron supplement that supports the formation of healthy red blood cells. The iron is in the form of ferrous gluconate, which is well-absorbed and gentle on digestion.
Floradix also provides vitamins B1, B2, B6, and B12, which work with iron to support red blood cell production. B vitamins are crucial for converting oxygen into energy once it's delivered to cells.
