Do Indoor Cats Need Vitamins and Supplements?
To keep your cat healthy and happy, you may need to feed a diet that is supplemented with vitamins. Cats have different nutritional needs than other animals because of their short digestive tract and selective feeding habits – they may not be meeting their needs depending on the food being fed to them.
As such, cat owners should consider giving their feline friends daily vitamins. Vitamin deficiency can lead to specific health problems in cats, including hair loss, skin irritations, rapid weight gain, constipation, and diarrhea (along with other digestive issues).
To determine what kind of supplement your pet may need, it is always best to consult with a vet. Simply changing their food supply to a natural, whole-food-based brand, along with ensuring Omega-3 intake may be sufficient.
Cat Supplements
Condition-specific supplements
Supplements are often highly specific in that they are formulated to address or treat a certain issue – most often in cats or dogs. Certain supplements can simply help older cats maintain a healthy, active lifestyle by providing them with relief from joint pain, arthritis, inflammation, loss of appetite, and malaise. Many of these are offered under the brand line Omega Alpha.
Essential fatty acids
Essential fatty acids, such as omega-3, are necessary for the overall bodily health and function of cats – just as they are vital for humans. They play an important role in maintaining healthy skin, coat, heart, and oral/intestinal well-being. They also help to support normal joint and muscle function. This is particularly important for indoor cats not consuming a lot of fish or seafood.
