Drug Interactions: Doxycycline, Minocycline, Tetracycline hydrochloride — zinc may reduce effectiveness. Take zinc at least two hours after ingesting these medications.
Nutrient Depletions: Diuretics, ethambutol, penicillamine, sodium valproate — zinc intake in the elderly may be sub-optimal and, if compounded with certain drugs, can lead to mild or even moderate zinc deficiency.
Breastfeeding may deplete maternal zinc stores, resulting from a greater need for zinc during lactation. Alcohol decreases the absorption of zinc and increases loss of zinc in urine. Diarrhea causes zinc loss. Those who have had gastrointestinal surgery or who have digestive disorders that result in malabsorption, such as sprue, Crohn’s disease and short bowel syndrome, may lack zinc.
Warnings and Precautions: Zinc supplementation can cause a copper deficiency.
Toxicity, Adverse Warnings and Side Effects: Echinacea should not be used on an indefinite, continuous basis. Echinacea is well tolerated by most people and Echinacea use is usually without side effect. Allergic reactions have been reported in people who are allergic to other members of plants in the daisy family (daisy, marigold, ragweed)
Adults: Take at first sign of cold, flu and dry or sore throat. Take after eating, a few hours before or after using other medications. Dissolve lozenges slowly in mouth. Consult a healthcare practitioner for use beyond 8 weeks. Children 4+ years: Maximum of 2 lozenges daily. Children 9+ years: Maximum of 4 lozenges daily. Adults 19+ years: Maximum of 10 lozenges daily.
