1) Black Maca enhances sperm production.
Black maca extracts reduces glucose levels in diabetic mice. Daily sperm production has been increased in both non-diabetic and diabetic mice groups.
Black maca has been shown to improve sperm production, sperm motility, and semem volume. However, serum levels of testosterone, estradiol, LH, FSH and prolactin were not affected.
Male rats were treated by gavage with aqueous extracts of varieties (Black, Red and Yellow) of maca. The results indicate that Black maca increased epididymal sperm count after 84 days of treatment. Black maca seems to act as a modulator of sperm count at the reproductive tract level.
2) Black maca enhances cognitive function.
Black maca appeared to have more beneficial effects on latent learning in overiectomized mice and all other varieties of Maca showed antidepressant activity.
Black maca improved experimental memory impairment induced by ethanol in a dose-response manner due, in part, to its content of polyphenolic compounds.
