The Science

The body needs adequate amounts of digestive enzymes to break down food. Digestive enzyme production naturally declines with age, but factors such as the standard Western diet also exert an influence. Insufficient supplies can slow down the digestive process, causing food to remain undigested or partially digested in the stomach. Inefficient or slower digestion can cause abdominal discomfort and occasional constipation, due to the gas produced when bacteria ferment undigested carbohydrates in the colon.
