How to Make Sure You’re Drinking Enough Water

Staying properly hydrated is essential for good health, but keeping on top of hydration can be difficult, especially during the summer months. If you find yourself forgetting to drink enough
water while it’s sunny out, take a look at these easy ways to stay hydrated.

1. Get a Water Pouch!
Make like a camel and carry a water pouch in your backpack. These aren’t just for hikers, they’re handy for commuters too! Don’t let the difficulty of taking off your backpack on a crowded bus
or train stop you from reaching your water bottle, just carry one of these hydration packs and you have water readily accessible!

2. Make Water Interesting.
I’m always a bit confused by people who say they don’t like water, after all it makes up about 65% of the human body. Learn to love water again by adding in slices of lemon, cucumber,
ginger, fresh berries, or even a little fresh mint. No need for sugar-laden, artificially flavoured water products, just go for fruit, herbs and spices to add a little pizzazz to your daily drinks.

3. Eat Fresh!
We often forget that the majority of our water intake actually comes from the food we eat, and not from tall glasses of plain water. Make sure your fluid intake is optimal by choosing fresh
fruits and vegetables, and healthy whole grains like quinoa, brown rice, barley and buckwheat that naturally soak up water as you cook them.

4. Opt for Coconut Water
Water intoxication is a real problem for athletes, but it can also affect people who drink a lot of plain water due to worries about heat stroke and dehydration. While it’s good to drink water,
too much can lead to oversaturation of cells, a loss of electrolytes, and painful muscle cramps as well as cognitive confusion, and even death.
Coconut water is an ideal natural way to replace lost minerals like potassium and magnesium that are sweated out during vigorous exercise or on hot summer days. Watch out for readymade
electrolyte drinks though, as many of these contain a high sugar content or undesirable artificial sweeteners, flavourings, colours and preservatives.

5. Water vs. Alcohol
During the hot summer months it can be tempting to lounge in the park or on a patio with a beer or glass of wine. While moderate alcohol intake isn’t the worst thing for your health, it’s all
too easy to drink a little too much and end up a bit dehydrated due to the diuretic effect of alcohol. Get into the habit of drinking a glass of water for every after your alcoholic drink and
you’ll be less likely to have a hangover the next day to maintain good health!*
