Omega-3 essential fatty acids can help your brain. A new study has now shown that it can help teenagers think faster and focus better. . . .

The study measured blood levels of omega-3 fatty acids in 266 teenagers between the ages of thirteen and fifteen who had low omega-3 blood levels. Each of the teens took a cognitive test that measured information processing speed and a second test that measured attention and focus.

The kids with higher levels of omega-3 had better processing speed and attention/focus.

This study adds more evidence that omega-3′s deficiencies can contribute to cognitive and attention problems and that supplementing omega-3′s can help. Deficiencies of omega-3 fatty acids are linked to ADHD. When kids with ADHD were given either a fatty acid supplement or a placebo for twelve weeks in a double-blind study, the fatty acid supplement produced significant improvement in cognitive function and behaviour compared to the placebo (Panminerva Med 1995;37:137-41).

In another study, 400mg of flaxseed oil–a very rich source of omega-3′s–and an insignificant 25mg of vitamin C given twice a day for three months led to significant improvement in children with ADHD (Prostaglandins Leukot Essent Fatty Acids2006;74:17-21).
